Tim Stephens Ready for Daytona Test Days with MBR
January 7-9, 2005
Tim Stephens will participate in Daytona Test Days, January 7-9, with Mike Baughman Racing driving a GT class Corvette. The Daytona Test Days weekend is the first event on the Rolex Sports Car Series schedule and is the official testing for the Rolex 24.All of the teams who intend on competing in the Rolex 24 on February 5-6, come to Daytona International Speedway for these three days of testing to work on car setup and driver development. It's also a preseason chance for the fans to see who's who for the upcoming race.
"Mike Baughman and I began discussions about racing the Rolex 24 together three months ago. While we're still working on a package for the race, the Test Days are the first step toward that," Stephens said about the program. "The MBR Corvette is a wonderfully prepared car. Compared to the GT Porsches, the Vette's disadvantage will come in the tight infield section, but it will be one of the fastest, if not the fastest, car around the banking and down the straights." He added.
This will be Tim's first time in the Corvette, first time at Daytona, as well as his Rolex Series debut. "Everyone keeps asking me if I'm excited about Daytona. To be honest, I'm trying not to be. Excitement is bad—it takes away from your focus and makes your mind worry. I'm more anxious about the chance to show my ability in the car. …I've spent the last several evenings over at the MBR shop sitting in the Corvette, visualizing and mentally preparing for the Daytona test."
The cars will first hit the track at 9:00 Friday morning. The teams will have 13 hours of testing opportunity over the three days. While there are no awards for turning the fastest lap, teams take a lot of pride in knowing that they were the quickest in testing, so it provides a very intense atmosphere.
