Race Weekend Recap
May 28-29, 2005
Event: Mid-Atlantic Time Trial Championship
Track: Summit Point Motorsports Park - Jefferson Circuit
In a weekend mixed with rain, unseasonably high temps, and constantly changing track conditions, Tim pulled out his fourth straight victory at the SCCA Mid-Atlantic Time Trial Championship race at Summit Point's 1.1 mile Jefferson Circuit. Overall, bested only by a Formula Atlantic Swift DB4, Tim set a time of 56.01 on the second day of runs, good enough to temporarily claim Fast Time of the Day.
Saturday: Due to an hour long rain shower, a brief malfunction of the timing system, and several cars with on-track mechanical difficulties, Saturday only produced one round of timed runs. With a less than perfect track, Tim turned in a lap of 57.1, fastest GT3, fastest closed wheel, and second overall fastest lap.
Sunday: Carrying on that momentum, with much improved track conditions, Tim opened the second day of timed runs with 56.5, giving him overall Fast Time of the Day honors at that point. While Tim's second run consisted of his fastest weekend lap, 56.01, it was no match for the Formula Atlantic which was now turning laps in the 52 second range. However, the second place GT3 car was over ten seconds slower than Tim in the MR2 lapping in the 66's giving Tim an easy victory.
With the win, however, Tim was unable to reset his previous track record from a year ago.
"The track was a bit off this weekend. When it started, lap times were over a second slower than what we would normally expect. There were a couple of blown engines on track and the rain didn't help either. Everyone was slower this weekend—I don't think any of the lap records were reset this time.
We had a good weekend. Got into a little bit of a battle for overall Fast Time of the Day, if only temporary, with the Swift Formula Atlantic which was a good boost since an FA car should be about eight seconds faster around here than the MR2."
Next weekend brings Tim back to Summit Point; this time on the 2.0 mile main track for the SCCA 12 Hours at the Point endurance race. Updates and reports to follow.
